WELCOME TO OUR FARM

We are a new small farm in situated in the beautiful foothills of the western Maine mountains. Our children's 4-H swine project turned into raising pigs for others.  We raised several different breeds then started researching breeds best for pasture. We finally selected registered Large Black pigs, a rare heritage breed. Large Blacks appealed to us because of their noted docile nature and placid temperament. This is important as we have children that will help in the care of the pigs. Our Large Blacks thrive on a daily routine of walks in the pasture and love back rubs and belly scratches! We also wanted to find ways to utilize and manage our open fields without the need for larger tractors and the purchase of more costly equipment.

We need many small farms that want to keep and raise heritage breeds of livestock to maintain diversity in our food systems. We see an opportunity for small farmers to provide a local source of meat to the growing number of people concerned with the safety of their food who no longer want to be wholly dependent on large-scale agriculture. Large farms offer cheap food but at a high cost to our global environment and to the detriment of our rural areas.

Waiting list for spring 2011 litters!
