Pigs do eat grass. Pigs are hearty
and can live year-round on pasture. These
facts are true if the pigs are Large Blacks,
an old-fashioned heritage breed, that are true
foragers. Large Blacks are able to thrive
on pasture for a significant portion of their
diet. They are easily contained with simple pasture
systems. The fact that they are noted for their
hardiness in extreme climates made them an ideal
livestock choice for us as we wanted animals
that could be raised outdoors year round. Raising
pigs on pasture has the added benefit of no manure
management and low or no offensive odors. The
pigs enjoy a low stress environment with plenty
of fresh air, sunshine and room to roam, root,
wallow or graze at will. Our long-range goal
is to raise these pigs for their high quality,
old-fashioned pork taste.
Large blacks are very
docile and are an excellent choice of breed for
women that are interested in raising pigs.
These pigs offer the farmer
or family interested in raising their own pork
an alternative to commercial breeds at a cost
savings in terms of feed costs, housing needs,
and time management. Above all, you will have
old-fashioned tasting pork that is unique in
flavor and brings a premium price in a growing
niche market.
